The adoption gap is real, it's widening, and "I'm watching it" is no longer a safe position.

Almost no one is actually doing this. A Small Firms Association survey found just 18% of small businesses have built AI into their actual operations. Not "explored it." Not "tried ChatGPT once." Built it in. A separate report puts the same number at fewer than one in five, with 31% saying they haven't even started looking. Meanwhile, the businesses that have adopted AI are compounding advantages in speed, cost, and customer experience every single week. Waiting used to be a reasonable stance. Now it's a choice to fall behind. Read the survey findings.

Here's the part that should bother you more than the 18% number. Most of that 18% is still using AI for the easy stuff: drafting email, filling in spreadsheets, writing product descriptions. That's fine, but it's table stakes. The owners pulling ahead are rebuilding workflows around AI, not stapling it onto the side of what they already do. There's a 100-year-old factory story that makes this painfully clear. When electricity arrived in the 1890s, factories swapped their steam engines for electric motors but kept the same floor layout, same processes, same everything. They got almost no productivity gain. The factories that eventually won were the ones redesigned from scratch around the new technology. Same thing is happening now. If you're just swapping a tool without redesigning the workflow, you're repeating the 1890s mistake.

Your customers are already using AI to shop, and most small business websites aren't ready for it. Salesforce's State of Commerce report shows AI-assisted shopping searches jumped 200% in 12 months. Nearly half of buyers may already be using AI to find, vet, and compare products before they ever land on your site. That's not a future trend. That's now. On the business software side, Thryv and Wix just announced a partnership to give service-based small businesses a single platform combining AI-powered business management with website tools, marketing, and payments. Whether or not you use either product, the signal is clear: the SMB software stack is consolidating around AI-native platforms. If your web presence isn't set up to show up in AI-generated answers, you're invisible to a fast-growing slice of buyers. Full story here.

One more thing before the tools. Stop checking AI benchmark leaderboards. Those scores measure how models perform on standardized tests, not on your invoicing process or your customer follow-up queue. Shelly Palmer made this point well: now that automated workflows (not humans) are often the ones actually using AI models, the only ranking that matters is which model works best on your specific tasks with your specific tools and data. The wrong framing leads to the wrong setup and wasted money. Worth five minutes of your time.
