AI Is Killing Jobs, Except at the Businesses Actually Using It

New data flips the narrative, and there's a warning buried in the good news.
AI adopters are hiring more, not less. New research from Gusto looked at small businesses that adopted AI and compared their headcount growth to similar businesses that didn't. The AI adopters grew their teams faster in the year after adoption. That's it. That's the finding. No asterisks about "certain sectors" or "enterprise only." Small businesses. Hiring faster. If you've been holding off on AI tools because you're worried about what it signals to your team, this is your permission slip to stop worrying about that particular thing. Read the Gusto research here.
Now for the warning buried in the good news. A Forbes essay this week makes an uncomfortable argument: AI is removing so much friction from starting and running a business that founders may be skipping the hard experiences that build real judgment. The author's point isn't that AI is bad. It's that struggle is where you learn to think. If your AI is writing your first sales email, generating your business plan, and handling your customer objections, you might be getting the output without developing the instinct. That matters when something breaks and the AI has no answer. Worth reading slowly, not skimming. The full essay is here.
These two stories belong together. More hiring, less struggle. The question isn't whether to use AI. It's whether you're using it to go faster on things you already understand, or using it to skip understanding them in the first place.
