OpenAI opened a self-serve ad platform this week, and small businesses should be the first ones through the door.

Main

There's a shift happening in how people find things to buy, and it's moving faster than most owners realize.

OpenAI opened its ad platform this week. You can sign up right now at ads.openai.com and buy placements directly inside ChatGPT. The pitch is simple: millions of people come to ChatGPT every day in high-intent moments. Not killing time. Not doom-scrolling. They're asking things like "what's the best CRM for a five-person sales team" or "find me a local plumber who handles commercial properties." Those are exactly the moments that used to belong to Google Search.

If you've watched your Google traffic flatten or dip over the last year, this matters. AI-referred visitors tend to be further along in their decision-making than search-referred ones. They've already been filtered by the AI. Worth putting a real (if modest) budget toward testing it now, before everyone else figures this out and bids prices up.

That said, there's a counterweight worth knowing. Cloudflare's CEO warned this week that AI discovery could actually hurt small businesses that aren't optimized for AI results. More on that in the headlines below. The short version: getting in early on both organic AI visibility and paid AI placements is the hedge.

Claude moved into Slack. Anthropic launched Claude Tag in beta, which brings Claude into Slack as a shared team member you tag with @Claude. It's not a chatbot that answers one-off questions. It takes tasks, breaks them into stages, works through them using tools and data your admin has approved, builds context about how your team operates over time, and can even follow up on stalled work on its own. Andrej Karpathy, one of the people who literally helped build modern AI, called it a major redesign in how AI interfaces work. That's not nothing.

If your team already lives in Slack, this is the most natural AI integration I've seen. No tab-switching, no separate login, no "remember what we were doing last week" problem.

Here's the catch. Claude builds up a persistent memory of your company's operations inside Anthropic's system. That context accumulates over time, which is what makes it useful. But it also means you need to ask hard questions before you roll it out: Where does that memory live? Who owns it? Can you export it if you switch tools? Get the answers in writing, not in a blog post. Available now to Enterprise and Team customers, with admins controlling access.

The Forbes piece you should actually read. Rebecca Shostak, CEO of Flodesk, makes the argument that small businesses are the actual winners of this moment, and she backs it with data. A Goldman Sachs survey found 87% of small business owners say AI adds to what their team does rather than replacing people. The Federal Reserve's Small Business Credit Survey confirms marketing is still the number one operational challenge for small businesses. Her point: AI handles the repetitive marketing work, and that frees owners to do the thing large brands literally cannot do at scale, which is show up as a real, specific, community-rooted business. That's not hype. That's a real competitive gap worth thinking about.

New Tools

Crewdle: AI chat, agents, automation, content creation, and website building in one platform. Replaces five subscriptions. Pay-as-you-go pricing. For owners tired of juggling tools.

Viktor: AI employee inside Slack and Teams, connects to 3,200+ tools, acts on its own, and suggests workflow automations based on how your team actually works. For teams who want AI that takes action, not just answers.

Propane: Pulls customer context from all your tools into one live shared view for your product team and AI agents. For founders building software who are tired of AI agents working from stale data.

Ruby: Listens to your calls in real time and privately shows you the next best question to ask, visible only to you while the conversation is happening. For sales, client calls, and negotiations.

Nimt: AI search coworker that lives in Slack and handles research and search tasks end to end. For small teams who want AI-powered research without leaving their workspace.
