The people building AI just admitted it will displace workers at scale. Here's the framework small owners need before they automate anything.

Main

The companies building AI are now funding research into the jobs their own technology will eliminate. That's not a conspiracy theory. Forbes reported it this week. And honestly, it's the most useful thing they've done for small business owners in a while, because it forces the right question.

Not "will AI take jobs?" That debate is over. The real question is: which tasks in *your* business should you hand off, and which ones should stay human?

Here's a simple way to think about it. Every task in your business sits somewhere on a spectrum. On one end: repetitive, rule-based, low-judgment work (scheduling, data entry, drafting first versions of documents, answering the same three customer questions for the hundredth time). On the other end: high-judgment, relationship-dependent, trust-sensitive work (a hard conversation with a client, a creative pitch that needs to feel like you, a hire that changes your team's culture). AI is genuinely good at the first category. It still gets the second category wrong in ways that cost you.

The mistake most owners make is either automating nothing out of fear, or automating everything out of excitement. Both are expensive. Pick five tasks your team does every week that are repetitive and low-stakes. Start there. Measure what you get back. Then decide what's next.

Meanwhile, the data is starting to tell a real story about who's winning. BizTech's latest piece found that small organizations are among the fastest AI adopters right now, and the early movers are pulling ahead on cost and speed. This one surprised me a little, because the conventional wisdom was always that small businesses would lag behind enterprises with bigger IT budgets.

Turns out the opposite is true. Large companies are slowed down by procurement approvals, IT governance, and risk committees. You can trial a tool on Monday and deploy it by Friday. That's an actual competitive edge, and it's one that disappears the moment everyone catches up. The window is open. It won't stay open forever.

New Tools

Folio: AI that builds and fixes PowerPoint and Google Slides decks in seconds. Claims to be 6x faster than competing tools. For anyone who spends too much time reformatting slides before a pitch.

Lyto: Chrome extension that acts like a browser agent — opens tabs, fills forms, updates Google Sheets and Docs for you. For owners drowning in repetitive browser tasks.

discode.ai: Routes your AI prompts across 100+ models automatically, redacts personal data before anything leaves your device, and tells you which model answered and why. Built for EU privacy rules, useful for anyone nervous about customer data in AI tools.

GetCompress: Desktop app that shrinks videos, images, GIFs, and PDFs up to 90% smaller, fully offline. For owners sending large files to clients or managing a website with heavy media.

Dotient: Local desktop search that uses machine learning to find files by meaning, not just filename. Everything stays on your machine. For owners with years of contracts, receipts, and docs buried in folders.
