Small business owners are running whole teams of AI workers right now, and the government just offered to help pay for it.

The New York Times ran a piece this week that should stop you mid-coffee. Real small-business owners are managing multiple AI agents in parallel, each one handling a different job: customer emails, research, outreach, back-office operations. Not as a pilot. Right now, today. An AI agent, if you haven't bumped into the term yet, is basically a bot you give a goal to, and it figures out the steps on its own. Think of it like hiring a very fast intern who never sleeps and doesn't ask for snacks. The owners profiled aren't tech founders. They're the kind of people who used to post a job on Indeed and wait.

This matters because the cost and complexity of building a small team just dropped. If you've been waiting to see whether this stuff was real, the Times piece is your answer. It's real.

Now the timing gets interesting. Anthropic, the company behind Claude, just launched a small-business-specific version of its AI assistant. Claude has been around for a while as an enterprise and developer tool, meaning it was priced and packaged for companies with IT departments. The new version is aimed at smaller teams. Anthropic is one of the few AI labs that has a genuine reputation for safety-first thinking, which in plain terms means the model tends to be more careful about what it outputs and less likely to confidently make things up. Whether it beats ChatGPT for your specific workflow is worth a test, but the fact that they're now courting small owners directly is a signal worth paying attention to.

And then there's this: the U.S. Small Business Administration just partnered with Perplexity AI on a $25 million program called the Main Street AI Accelerator. Perplexity is an AI-powered search tool, somewhere between Google and a research assistant. The SBA program is designed to get Main Street owners access to training and tools, potentially subsidized or free. The details on eligibility are still thin, but $25 million earmarked for small-business AI adoption is worth bookmarking. Keep an eye on SBA.gov if you want to get in early.

Three separate things pointing in the same direction. The AI-as-workforce era isn't coming. It's already here for owners who want it.
