Your Meeting Bot Is Making You Look Bad

Fireflies just rebuilt how small teams handle calls, and there's a free AI summit this week you shouldn't miss.
Main
If you've ever had a Zoom bot join your client call, sit there with a weird name in the participant list, and then send you a mediocre transcript, you know how clunky this category has been. Fireflies.ai just changed that.
Their July update is the biggest they've shipped in a while. The new Desktop App (Mac and Windows) captures any meeting without dropping a bot into the call at all. No awkward "Fireflies is recording this meeting" announcements. It just runs in the background, gives you live assist during the call, and auto-generates summaries when you're done.
The part I find more interesting for small teams is AskFred. Think of it like a search bar that reaches across everything your company knows: email, Slack, Notion, your CRM. Ask it "what did we promise the Johnson account last month?" and it goes looking. That's the kind of question that currently lives in your head or takes fifteen minutes to dig up manually.
They also added a Personal Assistant that gives you a daily digest of action items and preps you for upcoming meetings. And voice cloning, which lets you clone your voice in under 30 seconds for use in AI voice agents across 30 languages. That last one is worth watching if you're starting to think about AI handling inbound phone calls for your business.
Small teams juggling lots of client calls will feel this one.
If you want to get smarter on AI without paying for a consultant, the SBDC is hosting a free virtual AI Day Summit on July 16. America's Small Business Development Centers run these nationwide, and they tend to be practical rather than theoretical. Registration is free and it's open to any small business owner. That's tomorrow, so go grab a spot now if you're interested.
One more thing worth keeping an eye on. The Information is reporting that OpenAI found a way to cut its AI inference costs in half and has already quietly tested the change on logged-out ChatGPT users. Inference cost, if you're not in the weeds on this, is basically what it costs OpenAI to run the model every time someone asks it a question. Lower inference cost means they can either pocket the difference or pass it along to API customers as cheaper pricing.
They haven't announced anything officially. But if your business is running on OpenAI's API today, cheaper access to their best models would matter. The last big price cut was around 80 percent on their o3 model. This one could be in the same range. Watch for an announcement.
