You're Already Paying for This AI Tool and Probably Don't Know It

Microsoft just turned on Copilot for every 365 subscriber, someone figured out how to sabotage your AI search rankings with 13 words, and Anthropic blinked on pricing.

Main

If you pay for Microsoft 365, which covers Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, the whole suite, you now have AI workflow tools switched on by default. Copilot Cowork went generally available this week for all Microsoft 365 users globally. No extra signup. No waiting list. It's just there.

Here's the part that actually matters for your wallet. Microsoft claims it runs 30 to 40 percent cheaper per prompt than Anthropic's comparable product. And in the same announcement, Microsoft said it's exploring a fine-tuned version of DeepSeek V4 as a backend option, priced at $0.14 to $0.28 per million tokens. To put that in plain English: a "token" is roughly three-quarters of a word, and "per million tokens" is how AI companies measure how much thinking your prompts cost them. Frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic run far higher. DeepSeek is the budget airline of AI models, and Microsoft is eyeing it as their engine. That should tell you where prices across the whole industry are heading. Down, and faster than most people expect.

The practical upshot: if you've been paying for a separate AI tool to do things your Microsoft 365 apps could now handle, spend twenty minutes this week checking what Copilot Cowork actually does in your version of the suite before renewing anything.

On the opposite end of the pricing news: Anthropic blinked. The company was set to roll out a billing overhaul for the Claude Agent SDK, which is the tool developers use to build automated AI workflows. The update would have meaningfully raised costs for anyone running automations at scale. Anthropic pulled it on the day it was supposed to go live.

Why? Competitive pressure, mostly. OpenAI has been cutting prices, Microsoft is looking at DeepSeek, and nobody wants to be the most expensive option right now. The pause is not a cancellation. It's a retreat to regroup. If you or your team built anything on Claude's API, your costs stay where they are for now. But this episode is worth bookmarking, because AI platform pricing can change overnight and with almost no warning. Building your entire operation on one provider without a backup plan is a real business risk.

Now the story that should actually unsettle you. Researchers at Cornell published findings showing that 13 words planted in a Reddit comment or Wikipedia edit can reliably trick ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews into recommending a fake business or a scam app, and then citing that random comment as a credible source.

These AI search systems pull nearly a quarter of their citations from user-generated sites. They treat a Reddit post with roughly the same trust as a government page. That's a design flaw, not a fringe edge case.

If your business depends on showing up well in AI search results, or if you compete in a space where someone could easily post garbage about you on a forum, this is a real and current reputational risk. There's no clean fix yet, but monitoring what's being said about your business on Reddit and other open platforms is now more than a vanity exercise.
