You're Still Doing Five Jobs. Your Competitors Are Doing Two.

New data shows where small business owners are actually getting relief from AI, and where they're still drowning.
The average small business owner is running five roles at once. A survey of 1,000 U.S. owners found that's not a figure of speech. Five distinct functions, one person, every day. The good news from the same survey: AI is starting to absorb the creative load. Writing, image work, content drafts, social copy. The owners getting the most relief are the ones who handed off the "blank page" problem first. If you're still staring at a cursor at 11pm trying to write a product description, that's the first thing to fix.
AI for speed, humans for stakes. A new LegalZoom survey nails something most owners figure out the hard way: entrepreneurs are using AI to move fast, but they're calling a real person when the situation could blow up. First-pass contracts, research, drafting, quick analysis, AI handles that. The moment legal liability, financial exposure, or your reputation enters the room, people switch back to humans. That's not a failure of AI. That's good judgment. Think of AI as the intern who can draft anything overnight, and the lawyer as the person who reads it before you sign.
Meta just dropped new AI tools aimed squarely at small business advertisers. If you're running paid social, this one's worth a look. Meta rolled out AI upgrades that reach into ad campaign management and Google Workspace integrations. The pitch is that AI helps with targeting, creative, and reporting without forcing you out of the tools you're already using. For a small owner managing their own Facebook or Instagram ads, having AI suggest creative tweaks or flag underperforming targeting isn't a small thing. That used to cost you an agency retainer.
