You've Been Using AI Wrong (And It's Not Your Fault)

The real reason your AI tools aren't paying off yet has nothing to do with the tools.

Main

The most common complaint I hear from owners right now: "We tried AI. Didn't really do much for us."

Shelly Palmer just wrote the best explanation I've seen for why that happens. His argument: when factories got access to electricity, most of them didn't redesign their operations around it. They just swapped out steam engines for electric motors and kept everything else the same. Productivity gains were minimal. Then, decades later, the factories that actually rebuilt their floor plans, supply chains, and workflows around electricity started printing money.

AI is the same story. If you bolt ChatGPT onto your existing process, you get a slightly faster version of the same broken process. That's it. The gains come when you look at a workflow and ask, "If I were designing this from scratch knowing AI existed, what would this look like?" That's a harder question. But it's the right one. Read his full essay here.

On the tools front, something worth paying attention to: early testers of GPT-5.6 Pro are reporting it built a fully functional Sims-style 3D game in a single HTML file in under 48 minutes. No external coding tools. One prompt, one file, done. That's not a party trick. That means owners with no technical background are now a few good prompts away from custom internal tools that would've cost thousands to build a year ago.

OpenAI also started rolling out a new voice mode that can interrupt you mid-sentence and track background speech in real time. And Codex (their coding assistant) now lets you record your screen actions to automate desktop tasks. If you've been using ChatGPT mainly to draft emails, you're leaving a lot on the table. Details and demos here.

One more thing. If you or your team paused on using Claude because of all the political noise around Anthropic and national security concerns, that risk has dropped significantly. After a G7 meeting with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Trump told Axios he no longer views the company as a national security threat. The previous situation, where Claude's best models were pulled offline for non-U.S. users due to regulatory pressure, was a real consideration. Now it's a much safer bet to build workflows around Claude again if that's your preference. Full story here.
